How to choose a high-pressure hose reel

A hose reel is chosen based on four criteria: the diameter and length of the hose, the pressure, the water temperature, and the winding type. Here is how to avoid making a mistake.

1. Hose diameter (DN)

The DN is the inner diameter of the hose, in millimeters. It is also often given in inches:

DN Inches Common usage
DN06 1/4" low flow rates
DN08 5/16" most common on professional cleaners
DN10 3/8" higher flow rates, long lengths
DN12 1/2" high flow rates, fixed installations
DN19 3/4" very high flow rates, supply

2. Capacity: length AND diameter

The capacity of a reel is always given for a specific hose diameter, e.g., "60 m in DN12." With a thinner hose, the drum can hold a longer length; with a thicker hose, a shorter length. What really matters is the outer diameter of the hose: a double-braided hose is thicker than a single-braided one of the same DN.

Example: a drum designed for 60 m of DN12 will easily hold 60 m of double-braided DN08.

3. Pressure and temperature

The limit of a reel is determined by its swivel fitting (the rotating joint through which the water passes). Verify that it supports the nominal pressure of your machine, and the temperature if you work with hot water.

  • Machine up to 300 bar: most stainless steel automatic reels are suitable.
  • Machine of 400 bar or more: choose a model rated for 400 bar, or a manual high-pressure reel.
  • Hot water: check the maximum temperature (often 90°C, some models up to 130°C or 150°C).

4. Automatic or manual?

  • Automatic (spring-loaded): the hose rewinds by itself. Ideal for wash bays and workshops. Lengths are more limited (up to about 60 m).
  • Manual (crank): simpler and more robust, it accepts very long lengths (100 m and more) and high pressures. Ideal for a vehicle or a trolley.

5. Stainless steel or powder-coated steel?

Stainless steel resists moisture, chemicals, and frequent washing: it is the choice for wash bays, the food industry, and agriculture. Powder-coated steel is cheaper and is suitable for workshops and more sheltered uses.

6. Fittings

Check the reel inlet (machine side) and its outlet (hose side). If the hose has a female M22 connection and the reel has a 1/2" female outlet, you will need a 1/2" male / M22 male adapter nipple. Our guide to fittings will help you identify them.

Useful accessories

A hose stop on the hose prevents it from retracting completely into the reel, and a hose guide protects the hose when passing through a wall.
